The Four Demon Kings (四天魔王 Shiten Maō, lit. "Four Heavenly Demon Kings") were the most powerful "demonic" beings within the Mystic Realm: their domain that they ruled over with monarchical authority.[1][2][4]Alongside Lucia, the four act as the final antagonists of the Rave Master series.
Description[]
Megido was the first to join hands with Demon Card's leader, Lucia Raregroove, in accordance with Demon Card's Project DR, "Dark Rendezvous", and was also the Demon King to most closely serve Lucia out of the belief that the boy was the "Great Demon Lord's Vessel" (大魔王の器 Daimaō no Utsuwa).[2][5] Eventually, the other three Kings Asura, Jiero, and Uta joined Lucia as well.[3][6]
Pumpkin Doryu was originally a Demon King himself,[1] though supposedly far below the four others in power due to his youth and inexperience, with his defeat by a human considered by Megido to be a stain on the Demon Kings' reputation.[7]
Members[]
- Megido: The physically largest Demon King, appearing as a humanoid werelion. He was bestowed the epithets "Megido of Lava" and "Megido of Hellflames"[8][9] in recognition of his tremendous fire and heat abilities, which proved sufficient, at one time, to stop even the godlike Endless in its tracks momentarily, with a single attack.[10] Originally based in his fortress in the Mystic Realm's Urburg Region, Megido was the first of the Demon Kings to align himself with Lucia in accordance with Project DR, while also seeming the most loyal to Lucia out of the four and the one most dedicated to their plan.[11][12][13][14][15] Megido was ultimately defeated by Shuda, a feat that the latter could accomplish thanks to his high fire resistance.[16]
- Asura: A Demon King known as "Asura the Jet-Black",[17] "King of Magic Stones", and "Living Dark Bring",[18][19] who was notable for being the holder of every Dark Bring in existence[20] (including formerly one of Sinclair's pieces),[21] making his power and versatility during combat overwhelming, especially given his ability to invoke the power of multiple DBs at once.[22] While initially appearing small and imp-like, this was merely to conceal his true form: that of a giant, hulking, Satanic demon with countless DBs embedded all over his body.[23] Being literally made of DBs, Asura could only be destroyed by Rave (and Plue), being otherwise impervious to all harm; he was ultimately smashed to pieces by Haru wielding his final, Rave-powered Holy Sword, Ravelt.[24]
- Jiero: A Demon King who took the form of a beautiful, scantily clad woman free of overtly inhuman features. She was known as "Jiero of Despair" and endowed with extremely potent, high-level Ice Magic. Initially found encased in an icy crystal as a 2,000-year-old "Frozen Beauty", she awoke from Sinclaire's presence and promptly froze an entire town solid.[25] Her body or rather her skeleton was made of ice itself, allowing her to simply reform when physically damaged,[26] and her most powerful spell involved conjuring forth dead spirits en masse to haunt her foes until they were left with naught but despair.[27] It took the concerted efforts of Julia, Belnika, and Niebel to defeat her: Belnika performing a suicide-bombing maneuver and Niebel sacrificing his lifespan to wear down the demon queen, and then Julia dealing the finishing blow by breathing fire into the queen via mouth-to-mouth, thus burning her skeleton.
- Uta: A Demon King human-like monikered "Uta the Eternal" and "War King Uta",[28][29] holding tremendous strength and martial skill: he wielded a gargantuan sword called Eternal Sword (over ten times his own height and mass, befitting a giant's size) with immense dexterity, swinging it around like an oversized fly swatter; according to Let, Uta was aptly reputed to be the very best sword user in the Mystic Realm. While Uta initially took on Let and Musica in a two-on-one battle, it later devolved into a one-on-one against Let, who ultimately succeeded in taking down Uta (who midway through their bout took on a second, more demonic form) following a grueling struggle, after the Dragon Race member had transformed into a true Dragon King.[30][31][32]
Former Members[]
- Pumpkin Doryu: A vampiric-looking Sentinoid who was known as the "Ruler of Night" and headed the dark criminal organization called Doryu Ghost Attack Squad.[33][34][35] He was a master of various Dark Magics, including necromancy,[36] and additionally wielded one of Sinclair's pieces: the Mother DB Vampire that granted him reign over gravity (attractive and repulsive forces).[37] Doryu was, in fact, a former Demon King who had reigned in the Mystic Realm in the past, yet who had forsaken his status in favor of living with humans on the surface world; supposedly (per Megido's word) Doryu was far weaker than the four reigning Demon Kings due to his comparative youth and inexperience.[38][39] He is the only Demon King to not have aligned himself with Demon Card.
Trivia[]
- The kings may, in name, be inspired by the "Four Heavenly Kings" (Japanese: 四天王 Shiten'nō): four Buddhist gods (devas) serving their lord Śakra, who are known as the rulers and guardians of the world's four quarters, each presiding over one of the cardinal directions. They live halfway up the four sides of Mt. Sumeru on whose summit Śakra dwells, and their respective functions are: to protect the world; to discern and punish evil while encouraging aspiration for enlightenment; to listen to the teachings of Buddhism and protect the place where the Buddha expounds them; and to relieve mortals of their sufferings. Such heavenly, benevolent nature of theirs would stand in contrast to the more malefic, "demonic" nature of Rave Master's Demon Kings.
